[ANCILLARY] Examining previous ancillary work

Poppy Power - Lights Out

DIGIPAK

Strengths
  • The colours of black, white, orange and red is used which balances out, and makes the album look mysterious with light. This could reflect on their music video incorporating light bulbs in the dark, its sort of a ghosty-mysterious feel, yet vibrant.
  • The font is easy to read, which helps attract potential audiences
  • The image clearly portrays the artist, promoting herself and her album
  • The use of the company logo, copyright text and bar code is the right size and it looks in proportion
Weaknesses
  • On the front cover, the image of the artists face is a bit unclear
  • There isn't a disk inside, no artists name, the title font of the album is different to the outer front cover
ADVERTISEMENT

Strengths
  • The same image on the front cover is used for this advert, this allows potential audiences or fans to identify the album quickly
  • The same font, and colour of white and cream-yellow is used on the album cover as well as the advert, this shows the matching elements
  • The advert has more information for the audience, such as where they can buy it, what popular singles are in the album and the website they can find her on
Weaknesses
  • It doesn't tell you when the album is released, so it could be time consuming for the audience to search up the release date

ANCILLARY - Digipak Practice

In class we did our first attempt on designing a digipak using really low quality images, despite that, I think my design came out quite well.
I abided by the conventions and had the copyright, barcode and company logo. The artist name and album title is clear and does not go onto the artists face.
I was consistent with the colour scheme, using gradient to achieve the solid background colour since her clothing was a similar colour to that then using the same colour for the typography.
I added the draw star design to the back of the design because I thought it was too simple for a female artists CD as well but it still helped it keep it's simplistic and elegant feel.

If I could improve on this, I would have added the 10 digit code, and the artists name and title again in the middle of the digipak and corrected the spelling mistakes in the copyright.

[ANCILLARY] Digipak photoshop practice

Evaluation
Using photoshop, and a given image I have incorporated conventions of a digipak. The pixilated image,  proved to be tricky to use because the photos size was too small. Therefore, I will keep in mind that taking the actual image of the artist, needs to be precise and on point. The colour scheme i used, was cream-pink, white and black. These colours are soft, and reflects the title of Angels Fly.

The track list, has been halved which counterbalances the conventions of a digipak. In the final digipak, I will use a whole track lost without cropping it in half on two sides.

ANCILLARY - Digipak Design Activity

This is the design activity we done during class. First we were given a really pixelated image which i did not like so i decided to use cheryl cole as my model which was a much better quality.I used the program photoshop elements to create the digipak. I did a really simple design so that the audience will get attracted by the album without having to look for much. All i wanted was the artist name , album name and the image of the artist at the front to make it as simple as possible and proffessional.

ANCILLARY WORK - Location Planning

We contemplated on returning to one of our location to take some images for the digipak but then came to a mutual agreement, that it was easier and more efficient to use a plan white background since we could take our photos anywhere and it made it easier for us to make our individual digipaks when it came to editing.
